A is for: annoyed and angry. Monday, June 14 gave a rough start for alphabet summer. Not yet recovered from our day trip to and from Alexandria on Sunday for our niece Molly's baptism, Maddy started the week in a foal mood which affected my mood. It rained all day, so we had to reschedule our trip to the Arboretum. We did manage to eat alphabet soup on the first day of Alphabet Summer.

Baby Angela
Angela Grace arrived on Tues, Oct 27, 2009 at 5:55 PM. On Sat, Jan 30, celebrated her baptism at the 5 PM mass then enjoyed a wonderful lasagne dinner made by several members of my amazing prayer group. We shared the evening with loving friends and family. The best part for me was that I finally got to see my beautiful baby girl wearing the gown I made for her nearly five months ago as I nervously anticipated her arrival. And now that she is here, I’m so grateful to have her in my arms. She’s a little baby and only weighed 6 pounds 7 ounces, so I had to take in the sleeves and I really should have made a sash for the waist because she’s so tiny. I’m glad I waited until she was born to make her matching bonnet because her melon is so petite. Everything’s a delicious blur these days. I’m excited to be sending the dress and bonnet up north to my brother and his wife so their brand new baby girl Molly (born January 19) can wear it for her baptism this summer. I really hope this gown is worn by many many babies, especially my own grandchildren!
teens, tweens, & tots OH MY!
I started these dresses for my young friends Christine (the teen), Kari (the tween), and Megan (the tot) back in late summer/early fall. I had hoped to have them done by Thanksgiving or at least Christmas, but alas I got a bit behind. I just delivered the dresses on Monday and the girls loved them, except for Maggie Rose who was quite put out that we would interupt her wii-ing to put on a stupid dress. Making the dress for the older girls was quite a challenge, especially Christine’s. I’m a bit out of practice with the whole dart thing. I was completely surprised to find that Christine loves her dress. I found all of the material at a local thrift store. All of the black velvet was made out of a curtain. How’s that for re-purposing? a mess of a dress
In mid-December, Lisa and I brought all the girls to the downtown Minneapolis Macy’s (our 5th time!) to view their annual 8th floor exhibit and sit on Santa’s lap. I literally threw this little red velvet dress together an hour or two before we went. It’s one of the most poorly constructed items I’ve ever made. I had wanted to make the baby a red velvet dress to match her big sister’s green one. Oh well, it worked for the picture I guess. Maybe I shouldn’t point out the safety pins in the back holding it together!
giving thanks
We had a wonderful Thanksgiving with our brand new baby girl Angela. I found this delightful dress (with a matching coat) for Maddy at a thrift store several months ago and then the exact same material at the fabric store and made a matching dress for baby Angela. I attempted to make a beret for the baby but it was WAY to big for her, so I gave it to Maddy and it fit her perfectly! The dress was a bit too big for her and the sleeves were obnoxiously big, but they looked so pretty together that I decided to use this picture of them sitting in front of my parent’s fireplace for our Christmas card.

Baptism Dress for Hannah Grace
BFF Lisa’s six-year-old daughter Hannah will be baptized this Sunday and I get to be her Godmother! Hannah helped with the fabric selection and made a fantasticly daring choice with the green ribbon. I think it’s the perfect color combination for a late winter dress with a burst of bright color to remind us spring is coming soon. Big thanks to my sewing buddy Marlena for letting me use her fancy schmancy machine to create the scalloped edges. Hannah also requested a “robe” so she can look like the priest. I made this pink fleece one as a jacket she could put on backwards. Luckily, it looks like a cozy soft dress when she does this. Maybe she’ll wear it as a jacket someday, or not. As I’m quickly learning, six-year-olds are difficult to persuade.

My dear dear friend Lisa started a non-profit organization called One Child at a Time, International this past spring to provide funding for international adoption. One Child at a Time believes every child deserves a loving family and is dedicated to connecting children who desperately need a family with those families who year to adopt.

teddy time
Maddy noticed a pattern I had bought at a thrift store last spring to make stuffed animals and begged me to make her own teddybear. How could I say no? So, we bought this impossibly messy poodle fleece and stuffing, dug out a few old buttons, and a red ribbon and I went to work while she was in school.
It absolutely made her day when she stepped off the bus to know that immediately following snack time, her job was to stuff the little guy. Then I sewed up his backend and TA DA we have a teddybear! He’s not perfect, but I think that’s his charm. Plus, on the way to her friend Bridget’s house to play later that afternoon she said to me, “Mom, his ears aren’t the way I wanted and his eyes are quite even, but I love him all the same and he’s perfect to me because you made him.” I guess my teddybear is a six-year-old girl because I wanted to squeeze her till her stuffing came out!
doulas and dresses
When Madeline was born, my husband and I hired Marion to be our doula at her birth. She helped me greatly in the preparation of Maddy’s birth too. So, as soon as I found out I was pregnant again, six years later! I called Marion to get her on board. About a month ago, during one of our birth planning meetings I gave her this polka dot dress to give to her 19-month-old granddaughter Whitney. Apparently it was a big hit!
